The White Oak tree is a local landmark. It is about 350 years old and was growing here when New York was called Niew Amsterdam, and as such, is of the few remaining traces of the virgin forest the first settlers found here. It is a healthy, robust heritage tree that ranks among the oldest of trees in New York State. It is only four feet less in diameter (16 feet) than the Bedford Oak (20 feet), and is in far better condition. Beautiful, landscaped, park-like grounds feature mature gardens, flowering shrubs and flowering trees. In addition to the magnificent landmark 350 year old white oak tree, there are three fully bearing professionally pruned apple and two pear trees, and other flowering trees and shrubs such as crab apple, quince, magnolia, dogwood, catalpa, forsythia, lilac, wisteria, peonies, roses, mountain laurel, and burning bush. There are hundreds of daffodils, narcissus, iris, violets, etc. The Springtime from April to June blazes with successive waves of color, and the oaks, maples, hickories, birches, dogwoods, butternuts, scarlet burning bush and Virginia creeper provide the same effect in autumn. The borders of the property attract and shelter bluejays, bluebirds, cardinals, hummingbirds, catbirds, red-winged blackbirds, flickers, downy and ivory-billed woodpeckers, mockingbirds, Baltimore orioles, purple martins, owls, doves and sparrow hawks as well as more common birds (towhees, titmice, robins, chickadees, purple finches, nuthatches, etc.). Squirrels, raccoons, possums, and honeybees have used the oak as a home, and a trio of does and fauns cross over the property at night. If you appreciate natural beauty and living things, you will be happy here. Sweeping, curving stone walls run along the boundary of the house along Croton Falls Road and along the driveway and parking area. A series of heavy, solid brass coach lanterns mounted on copper posts light the driveway and front porch area. This property is private, serene and beautifu.l Neighbor's houses can be partially seen through foliage, but remain unobtrusive. |
